Special Collections Display: Shakespeare & Elizabethan Fancy
London College of Fashion Library, London
I curated a display working with the brief given by the Special Collections team. Celebrating Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary, the display cases feature material from London College of Fashion Special Collections alluding to the Elizabethan era when most of Shakespeare’s plays were set.
The display consists of material ranging from 1858 to 2003, appreciating the different tactile properties of each. Notice the hand-painted illustrations in Henry Shaw’s books from 1858. In contrast, with new printing techniques, Visionaire plays with form and packaging to create themed books.
The glass cabinet was inspired by the fantasy of Shakespeare’s plays such as A Midsummer’s Night Dream and the theme of fantasy, dreaming and romance are contemporarily illustrated in 4 issues of Visionaire.
The glass case looks at how the Elizabethan era has been illustrated and materialised for the theatre, with an Elizabethan collar to evoke the costume construction shown.
