Stories from the Attic
Take Courage Gallery, London
The exhibition investigates the stories we embed into our clothing. As Orhan Pamuk muses— the future of museums is in our homes. By turning our gaze into the individual family unit, we encounter what is common to all of us— history and memory. We exhibited objects that had been kept from previous generations by a British-French family residing in South-East London. Acting as material prompts, the garments became starting points for recollections and anecdotes. The conversations we had with them in their living room were also interpreted visually through portraits by our photographer Aurelia Chiffe.
The exhibition experimented with different ways of exhibiting the family’s memories. Because of their cultural heritage, we mapped out their family photographs visually, clearly showing the different geographies that trace their family history. The objects were also exhibited to create little conversations between the objects and the photographs, and the objects’ different lives in the family.
Thank you to the Centre for Fashion Curation and London College of Fashion for their assistance.
